Move over Facebook, Twitter is the new place to be. Celebrities and sports personalities all over the world are signing on to Twitter. The Twitter mania started in the west and Bollywood too is slowly picking up. A lot of Bollywood stars have been blogging but Twitter is a new phenomenon. While a few A-listers are on Twitter, the authenticity of their accounts is still under scanner. Twitter has always had lots of fake accounts, including fake celebrities, but only now is it introduced a system to verify them.
The site has just announced that: "To prevent identity confusion, Twitter is experimenting with a 'Verified Account' feature. We're working to establish authenticity with people who deal with impersonation or identity confusion on a regular basis." With this feature, you can easily see which accounts are 'real' and authentic. That means Twitter has been in contact with the person or entity the account is representing and verified that it is approved. This does not however mean Twitter has verified who, exactly, is writing the tweets.
Recently on Twitter somebody was impersonating Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, which until last week she didn't even know about. Preity Zinta also signed up on Twitter to put an end to her fake account impersonator who had more than 140,000 followers. Shahid Kapoor, who was being impersonated on Twitter, registered a complaint with the portal and in a first of it's kind action in India, Twitter removed his fake ID, on grounds of impersonation. Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan too have fake accounts on Twitter but have done nothing about it. To put an end to this speculation, more and more celebrities are getting their accounts verified by the website.
While there is no foolproof way to determine a fake account from a real one, a few pointers that might just help.
Log on to the official website or homepage of the celebrity and check for links. There usually is a link to all their social networking sites account.
Another sure shot way to is to check the followers. Just like we follow our friends, they do that too. If the followers are not celebrites, it is likely that the account is fake.
If a high-profile verified account Tweeter introduces a new celebrity, it is most likely that the account is for real.
