When a beautiful, smart, suburban 40 - year old mother discovers her husband is cheating, she takes her two children to New York City to start over. A demanding new job forces her to hire a nanny, and she chooses 25-year old Aram, who is still trying to figure out what he wants in life. As Aram increasingly becomes attached to her kids, Aram and Sandy become aware of their own undeniable chemistry.
Catherine Zeta-Jones has undoubtedly crossed that threshold that separates the young from the old regardless of all attempts to look young. So it’s no wonder the spin on her latest romantic comedy The Rebound is that of an older woman hooking up with a much, much younger guy.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
Writer-director Bart Freundlich has done disservice to both his actors – Catherine Zeta - Jones and Justin Bartha. The script is mundane and sketchy, the direction lackluster. What makes the film bearable is Catherine Zeta-Jones who manages to give a credible performance despite the odds. Her co-star Justin Bartha is sincere as a reserved, goofy but cute person. It’s a welcome change to see it in a lead performance as so many male leads in the Rom-Com genre nowadays come across as smart Alecs. The supporting cast comes through well.
Forget the box office; The Rebound isn’t a film that’s going to be an in-demand DVD either.
Verdict
One for performances. One for script and direction.
