Despite differences of opinion, Sanjay Gupta and his one time good old friend Sanjay Dutt came together to can a rock song for Woodstock Villa. Producer, director, writer and editor Gupta reveals more…

Does this liaison mean that the two of you are back in the reckoning and that the enemity and bitterness is an old and forgotten tale?

You have to clarify this since you shot a song on Sanjay Dutt for Woodstock Villa, despite the fact that Hansal Mehta is the director of the film.
I shall talk about the film and the song, that’s it. Sanju makes a special appearance, yet a very integral part, that of a rockstar, in the film. Sanju liked what the famous band Aryans had composed for the song titled Kyun, and agreed to do it. This is the first time ever in Hindi films that a rock song of this kind has been picturised. As for me directing the song, I am told, that I shoot songs very beautifully. So when Hansal wanted me to do the song, I agreed.

Even Sanjay’s look is supposed to have been designed by you.
That’s right. Hindi films do not generally have anyone with the rockstar image. Only Saif Ali Khan is known to be the rockstar of Bollywood and he has even performed live. I wanted to give Sanju the complete rockstar look as I knew he could carry it off well. He is also passionate about rock music, even heavy metal and jazz. For this, I dressed him in a long flowing printed coat, dark glasses, hair pulled back and holding the world best-selling star-shaped blue flame top Washburn Dime electric guitar. When he was shooting it seemed like he was actually performing on stage. There is tremendous energy and style oozing out of this rockstar in the song.

Following the present trend, will the song appear with the end-titles or will it be shown as an “item” number?
Neither. It has a proper place in the film and I promise you, it will not appear out of place. And believe me, this song will be the rock anthem of tomorrow.

When and where did you shoot it?
Kyun was shot during the end of last year at the Pauna Lake on the hills of Kamshet Dam near Khandala. It is a very beautiful and scenic location.

You are known for exploring diverse genres through your films so what is your next film Woodstock Villa all about?
It is a suspense thriller handled in a very different way when compared to so many other films. It has a very new and natural look to it. I would like to say that it has been inspired from the late Vijay Anand’s school of filmmaking. Another interesting factor is that it has two new faces who have done a tremendous job.

Does that mean that newcomers Neha Oberoi and Sikander Kher will leave an impact on the masses with their performances?
Both are performers. The first time I saw Sikander when he walked into my office, I knew this young boy had in it in him. He has a fabulous screen presence and is very promising. As for Neha, she has already proved that she is a good actor having won many awards for South films. She is beautiful and also has a screen presence. Both will make me very proud, I am sure.

Neha is your niece, isn’t she?
That’s right. But she suited the role to a ‘T’ so she is in the film.

You seem impressed with Hansal Mehta as this is his second film with White Feather Films after Dus Kahaniyaan?
Hansal is a dear friend and a simple soul. He is very focussed and clear about what he wants. Moreover he is the CEO of my company.

As a producer, how involved were you in the project besides directing this song?
Not much really. But when the unit was shooting in Mauritius, I decided to go there, with the intention of enjoying my holiday while everyone else slogged. But unfortunately there was a cyclone that lasted for four days and everyone was confined to the hotel rooms without a phone, TV, newspaper and no access to the outside world. Being an ardent reader, I had carried a book that I finished reading in one day. I was the first to board a flight when there was a green signal stating that everything was clear. And was I glad to have escaped.

After Dus Kahaniyaan failed at the box-office, you have planned a package of ten films to be released in a series.
According to me, Dus Kahaniyaan was a cult film as it was innovative and yet managed to touch several hearts. Moreover the film was sold at an unbelievable price and everyone involved with the project is happy to have recovered the money that they had invested .
White Feather Films assures of quality products and I am glad that I had the guts to make a film like Dus Kahaniyaan. Its DVD sales were stupendous and now with satellite sale what more could one ask for?

What about the ten forthcoming films from your banner?
Of the ten films, about five are already on the floors. There are films by Meghna Gulzar titled Milte Hai, Hansal Mehta’s Blade after Woodstock Villa, Pooja Bhatt ‘s heartfelt love story that is yet untitled , Rohit Roy’s film, Sarthak Dasgupta’s The Great Indian Butterfly, Suparno Varma’s Acid Factory and Sudipto Chattopadhyay’s Pankh.
Work on Acid Factory has begun and once it is ready for release, I will move on Alibagh followed by Milte Hain. Within two years all the ten films will be released.
