Indian classical music is rich with variety of raags and relevant compositions. Besides stalwarts in this field, the young generation is also entering it just to nurture its inherent interest. But the young artistes need a sound platform for their presentation for their presentation. The Gayan Samaj Deval Club, a veteran cultural organisation that has completed 125 years has provided the opportunity to singers and dancers in its periodical programmes. Now on the same occasion, the club has decided to organise programmes throughout the year so as to let the local music lovers listen and appreciate both the stalwarts and young artistes in various styles of music, dance and drama. The first such performance was held recently in presence of well-known actor in Marathi and Hindi film world, Nana Patekar, who inaugurated the three-day concert sponsored by the Union Bank of India. In his inaugural speech, Nana Patekar expressed his high regard for the Deval Club and voluntarily accepted to be an ambassador for the club, which required at least 2 crores for completion of a new building with ultra-modern facilities that are needed for a cultural centre of a high quality and grace required for its national and global status. Referring to Union Bank of India that has sponsored the cultural activity, Nana recalled that he owes much to this bank because his wife was working with it.While he was earning only Rs.25 for a play, his wife was getting a few thousands which allowed him to continue his acting career. In the concert, Aarti Ankalikar-Tikekar presented Raag Nand in a very peculiar style that resembled a glimpse of the Jaipur gharana that claims this raag as its specialty. On the second day, M.Vyanktesh Kumar, a prominent singer of the Gwalior gharana presented Raag Yaman that created a very unique atmosphere peculiar to this raag. In compositions of Raag Jog and Sohoni he displayed subtlety and expertise in presenting moods inherent in compositions of these raags. In response to the audience he also sang a Kannada devotional song. A dance performance by Rajashree Shirke and her troupe presented the Kathak style with its various forms with musical compositions from different gharanas. Light classical music, particularly popular Marathi songs, were also superbly presented by Ravindra Sathe and Suvarna Mategaonkar.
