Rating: one
Plot: Young Raksha is possesed by evil spirits and her father, black magic unleashed as a vendetta.
Verdict: Long-winding, repetitive, boring with no scares at all.
Box office Prospects: Horrendous.
Creative Quotient:
Ram Gopal Verma, the self-proclaimed creative giant stumbles yet again. The publicity stunts not-withstanding, this is a film offers nothing new in terms of idea, technique or execution. And foremost, no scares. None at all!
RGV's tall claims about all that bone-chilling horror holds no water. A young family with father working on a construction site sacks a fraudulent couple working for him. These two unleash a black magic spell on young Raksha. While her granny and mom are keen to seek help from witch doctor, the father pooh-poohs their superstitions and insists on medical attention for his ailing daughter.
Well, the plot is wafer thin and lacks the element of novelty altogether. Similar story was seen years ago in Geherayee which had young Padmini Kolhapure's famous nude-back shot. That one was truly eerie but Ramu's edition is only about random shots of a evil-looking raven and several shots of stuffed toys littered all over the staircase. Totally boring story and even more tiresome treatment.
Technical Expertise:
Ramu repeats his Bhoot shots and thunderous background score, except this time he has a dark raven for novelty. But cinematographer Savita Singh's frames are a visual treat. Even Amit Parmar and Nipun Gupta's competent editing cannot save from becoming a yawn fest. However, lead actors Sudeep and Amruta Khanvilkar are the saving grace of the film. Their subtle performances are the only relief in this otherwise over-the-top venture. Ashwinin Kaslikar in huge black tattoo bindis and dark-kohled eyes looks mentally deranged and acts as if she really is unhinged. Loud, hideous -she slashes her wrist, licks her blood drops and lunges at her oppenents with a trident! She is completely unbearable in the film. The child artiste could better not have gone through such kind of a role, her vigorous eye-movements were better avoided. Her director is herewith accused of over-exploting his young charge. A film that is all Phoonk and no scares.
Rating: One star for the debutant lead pair Sudeep and Amruta Khanvilkar for their restrained act in an otherwise loud venture.
