Leading fashion glossy Marie Claire awarded designers Ritu Kumar and Manish Arora for their contributions to tweaking traditional textiles, craft and embroideries to give them a chic global appeal.

The debut 'Made in India' awards were given to the duo for being the best designers in Indian and Western wear respectively at a function held in New Delhi late Friday evening.

The event was attended by all the big names in the fashion industry as well as actress Tabu.

The awards, modelled on the 'Prix d'Excellence de la Mode' awards instituted by French magazine group Marie Claire internationally, is aimed at saluting designers who have promoted Indian textile or craft or used India as a muse in their creations.

Linking the awards to honour, uphold and revel India's emergence on the global fashion stage, Shefalle Vasudev, Editor, Marie Claire (India), said, "We now create definitive fashion because we are a definitive people. This is not patriotism, this is globalism."

Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who won the best designer award in the 'Most Innovative Collection' category said he wanted to appeal to all Indian designers to come to a single stage and represent the industry collectively.

Two special honours were also given to Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla for 'Best Craft Revival' and Abraham and Thakore for 'Best Textile Exploration'.

Actress Tabu, who gave away the award to Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, said they were her favourite designers. However, she refused to talk about her upcoming movie.

Among others who won awards were Rohit Bal (Best Designer, Couture), Ambrapali (Best Accessory Line), Anand Kabra (Emerging Designer), Manish Arora (Best Fashion Show Staging).

The award has reviewed the Fall-Winter 2008 collections shown in Indian Fashion Weeks.

A fashion exhibition showcasing fashion installations, carpets, tapestries, figures and figurines, decor and furniture products, created by Indian fashion designers was also put up on the occasion.
