It is a chick flick reversed and told through the man’s perspective. Tom Bailey (Patrick Dempsey) is a suave guy, and a lady’s man. His best friend, Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) is a simple and sweet girl who doesn’t mind Tom’s dubious habits with women. Hannah leaves town for a while and in her absence, Tom realises that he is in love with her.
He plans to propose the moment she returns but to his dismay she comes back on the arm of her fiancé Colin (Kevin McKidd). Hannah asks Tom to be her maid of honour at the wedding and a reluctant Tom says “Yes” in the hope of stopping the marriage and wooing her.
Nothing special in the story except for the unique narrative of looking at a clichéd plot from the guy’s eyes. But, it’s strictly for people who like romantic dramas or comedies and chick flicks.
Technical expertise
It is hard to applaud a done-to-death concept but one has to give credit to the film’s writers. Adam Sztykiel, Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont do a decent job with the screenplay and story and though it might not be fresh, it’s mildly funny and charming.
Having said that, there’s nothing wrong in the execution of the film, but when one sits through a premise that has been seen dozens of time before it becomes really hard to induce any interests.
The saving grace of the film is the acting of Dempsey and Monaghan. Their chemistry is great and their common perceptions towards the simple and perhaps drab nature of Colin add some zing to the film.
Verdict
Worth a watch, but it could have done better with some reinvention. Two stars for Dempsey and Monaghan’s chemistry and the film’s humour.
