Kismat Connection

Tips, Rs 150
The second Shahid Kapoor – Pritam collaboration lacks the substance of Jab We Met but is trendy and has the right mix for today’s youngsters who like their fortnightly doses of rock/hip-hop/funk/remix. Tu hai meri soniye (Neeraj) is as hip as it gets, but Atif Aslam’s harsh timbre in Bakhuda tumhi ho jars in contrast to co-singer Alka’s silky tenor. His diction is ultra-atrocious (Bakhuda chumi ho!) and ruins the only melodious song in the soundtrack. Pritam should lay stress on this important point now.
This is not a score meant for a permanent connection with hearts, but it’s catchy while it lasts - which is the only “connection” wanted today.

Mission Istaanbul
T-Series, Rs 160
A bevy of composers turn out a hybrid but moderately-appealing soundtrack. Hamza’s rendition gives a tangy Turkish flavour to the Chirantan Bhatt-composed title-track. From Anu Malik’s songs, Shaan-Mahalakshmi-Ege’s Jo gumshuda has a haunting quality while Yaar mere dildara (Javed-Sunidhi) is as familiar as they come. Nobody like you (Neeraj-Ishq-Anushka) – again by Chirantan – sounds fresh.

Mehbooba
T-Series, Rs 160
Ismail Darbar’s music is as painstakingly crafted as always, but he seems to be forced to go into a Laxmikant-Pyarelal overdrive, which should have been avoided completely. This is probably the legendary Anand Bakshi’s last soundtrack, but his lyrics do not rank anywhere near his best. Excellent singing in Tu meri mehbooba (Udit), Babuji (Alka with Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan) and Accha to ab main chalta hoon (Sonu) are a redeeming feature of this average score.
