Creative Quotient
Kalaipuli G. Sekaran attempts a horror flick with Malavika in a dual role as mother and daughter for the first time in her career. It is a simple story of a man (Raj) who hates women and the reason behind his distrust, a turbulent childhood. His mother eloped with another man and his father commits suicide. The childhood memories haunt Raj and he suspects the fidelity of every woman leading to the cancellation of his marriage to his fiancé (Malavika). Years later the two meet. He is now the Chief Secretary and she the Deputy Police Commissioner. She says she has a daughter (Malavika, again) from a failed marriage. He says that he has a devoted wife and a traditionally brought-up daughter. She visits his house with her daughter who finds out the fakeness of the family. The DCP probes into it that leads her to a haunted family house of the Chief Secretary where ghosts are said to live. Anyone who enters the abandoned house never returns. The DCP too is killed allegedly by the ghosts. The daughter decides to find out the truth against all odds about the haunted house. That unveils the mystery drama enacted by the Chief Secretary who kills his wife and daughter along with the servant and cements their bodies in a wall in the house.
Technical expertise
In a few scenes, director Sekaran creates the ‘horror impact’ well but he waters it down with insipid comic gags or songs that are unwarranted in a horror-mystery drama. Besides directing, he writes the story, screenplay, dialogue, lyrics and composes music and even acts in a comic role! Malavika gave a dignified performance in the elderly role. The others are just adequate.
Verdict
One star for G. Sekaran for handling so many departments deftly and one star for Malavika.
