After rocking the pop music scene with some hit numbers and being voted India’s top band twice, Hindi band Aryans is taking its music to Bollywood. Undeterred by the ranting against North Indians, this band of two Bhopali and two Lakhnavi guys is all set to make its debut in the much awaited Sanjay Dutt starrer Alibaug this summer.
We pinned down lead singer DJ Narain for some candid answers-
What do you feel about the recent attacks on North Indians in Mumbai. Are you comfortable in the film industry with these developments?
"That's a very parochial attitude. Kissi ki himmat hai to Hindi films aur music ko rok le Mumbai mein. And if that happens in Mumbai then what about Bangalore and Tamil Nadu and Delhi? This will lead to the disintegration of the very basis of Unity in Diversity on which our Constitution is founded. They are opening a Pandora's Box. It is unconstitutional and cannot be accepted.”
Looking relaxed and funky in a violet sequined shirt and sporting eye-catching glares, DJ Narain, relaxed on home turf over the weekend, stopping by the city of his birth to catch up with his family before moving back to Delhi where he is currently works as a senior bureaucrat with the Ministry of Defence.
"The last few years have been seeing music taking a backseat as I have been concentrating on my career as a civil servant. I was Vice Chairman of the World Military Games held at Hyderabad recently.
In an industry where bands break up in a matter of months, what's the reason behind the longevity of Aryans?
"Perhaps the fact that we are friends. Friends don't pass you by or leave you-you stay in touch forever, share an easy camaraderie. Today money is incidental. We share a high trust factor and comfort level. These things happen when you perform under pressure, we are very chilled out."
The band comprising two members from Bhopal - Sadu and Sunny and two from Lucknow Yaqoob and DJ, continue to make their kind of music and are glad they are entering Bollywood on their terms.
Says DJ Narain, “In Pakistan where there is no dominant film culture, you find pop and rock bands enjoying greater popularity. Same goes for Punjab where you have some good bands and singers. Wherever the film industry and music is dominant, you find pop bands taking a backseat like Hindi, Tamil and other South Indian languages. Music fulfills the social and cultural; needs of the mind and heart. Aryans has managed to exist as a pond in the ocean of Hindi music and we are glad that today the film industry has opened up to allow this pond to thrive on its own within the industry. After all we've twice been voted India's top pop band. Our music speaks for the common man-whom we call the Rajus of our society. I'd say there's a fusion of rock and alternate stuff and socially relevant themes to our music that contributes to its tremendous appeal.”
How has Lucknow contributed to your music?
"This city is at the soul of our music. All that we do relates to the life of the common man, the aspirations of the mohalla boy, the dreams of the penniless pauper on the street. It's an ode to Lucknow and its spirit of survival against the odds.
