What started off as director Abhishek Kapoor’s attempt to make a boy-bonding, coming-of-age film with some laughs thrown in, turned into a full-fledged movie on rock music. “I was listening to rock on my iPod and thought why not make a film on an Indian music band,” said Kapoor, who debuted in the film world with the not-so-successful Aryaan, starring Sohail Khan.

The promos of Rock On, currently on air, give the impression of a fun and energetic film with the carefully dishevelled Farhan Akhtar looking, well, like a rock star. Kapoor made a stopover in Delhi with the Rock On cast. “This movie emphasises friendship,” said Akhtar, who looked perfectly at ease in stone grey and blue jeans. Akhtar plays the lead singer in a band of four in the film. He trained under Shankar Mahadevan for the role. The other lads are Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli and Arjun Rampal.

Reminiscent of Akhtar’s smash-hit debut movie Dil Chahta Hai, Rock On is about friends, plus their rock band, Magik. The film also marks the celluloid debut of Prachi Desai, famous for her role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. “It has always been my fantasy to be a rock star. It was a surreal experience getting to play the part on screen. What helped was the fact that I have been a fan of rock music for 12 years,” said Akhtar, whose favourite band is the Beatles. After the August 29 release of Rock On, Akhtar plans to start work on the sequel to Don. Meanwhile, acting goes on in Luck by Chance and Fakir of Venice.
