'I have eight packs and don't mind going topless'

Subhash Ghai’s new movie Black & White is not quite in the pink of box-office health, but someone has made Bollywood sit up and take notice: the rugged-looking newcomer Anurag Sinha, who has found a fan even in co-star Anil Kapoor, who can’t help admiring “the youngster’s deep voice”. The 25-year-old from Patna, who reached Mumbai via the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), is still modest: “I just consider myself fortunate. It was by pure luck that I bagged a role in a Subhash Ghai film.”

Sinha, who was in the Capital, says he did not have small-town dreams; they were all splashed with Eastman colours. While studying at Scindia School, Gwalior, and doing chemistry honours at St Stephens College, Delhi, he wanted to be a hero, someone like Harrison Ford or Amitabh Bachchan. So in 2004, a year after graduation, he joined FTII’s acting course. From watching Akira Kurosawa and Satyajit Ray to acting in a Ghai film wasn’t a bother. “FTII trained me in acting. No matter which film, regional, arty or commercial, one has to act,” he says.

So, Sinha is open to all kinds of roles and is busy looking at scripts. And if you are wondering about six packs, which have suddenly become de rigueur in Bollywood, he is nonchalant: “I have eight packs and I do not mind going topless. In fact I would prefer doing such roles when I am 40 because by then those eight packs would be reduced to six packs.” Looks — and sounds — like hero material.
