'I had a hard time making her act'

Who would you want to be paired with in comedies?

That’s for the audience to decide. People loved my role with Riteish Deshmukh in Kya Kool Hain Hum and with Sharman Joshi in Golmaal. We share a great onscreen chemistry and have good comic timing. I get along especially well with Sharman.

How was it working with Govinda in Run Bhola Run?

I have shot just one schedule with him so far. The best part of working with him is that he is extremely energetic. He has great improvisation skills and keeps changing lines to make things funnier and more interesting. In the film, we play two thieves, who land up in the same jail, which lead to a series of funny situations. I have imbibed a lot from Govinda at a subconscious level.

Any memorable moment while shooting a comic sequence?

It was not really funny, but there were some interesting moments while shooting with Rajpal (Yadav) and Anupam (Kher) in our home production C Company. I play a crime reporter in the film and our characters stay in the same building. We are shown meeting on the terrace every day. We had to shoot for two hours every evening in the fading light. We knew the light would go at any moment and it was quite challenging to okay the shots in just two takes. A lot of coordination was required and thankfully, we got it right every time.

Who are your all-time favourite comedy actors?

Steve Martin, Goldie Hawn and Julia Roberts. Both Martin and Hawn make their comic timing seem effortless. Martin remains poker-faced while enacting the funniest sequences. Roberts, on the other hand, has an immense zest for life and energy that is reflected onscreen. Closer home, Govinda’s comedy stands out.

Were you also involved in writing the script of C Company?

The film has been written by Sachin Yardi, who is also directing it. But it’s true that I gave inputs.

Did you have a tough time convincing your sister (Ekta Kapoor) to act in C Company?

I tried very hard to make her act. She agreed after much persuasion. She will appear in one scene, though there are several references to her throughout the film. In the sequence, she is shown meeting Mithun Chakarborty’s character, who is a huge fan of her shows. I think my sister is a great actor, but she is camera-shy. When we were children, she used to dance at parties and enjoyed imitating actors. But over the years, she has become self-conscious.
