Her pairing with a younger Ranbir Kapoor may have come under speculation, but Bipasha Basu's spontaneity in Bachna Ae Haseeno has impressed critics and fans alike.

You stole the thunder in Bachnaa Ae Haseeno. Did you expect such a thunderous response to your performance?
I really did not know what the response to my part would be, but yes the appreciation has come as a lovely surprise. I did the role because the film was a cute romantic and I could relate to my character Radhika.

There was a lot of speculation about your pairing with Ranbir Kapoor but you seemed to have pulled off the act pretty well!
It's sad that women get tagged as old when they are in their late 20s! People actually made me feel as old as Mr Bachchan. But it's a good sign that audiences have liked the chemistry between Ranbir and me which has put an end to all speculations.

There were reports about a conflict between you and Deepika Padukone when you were to appear on a reality show to promote BAH.
Oh that's all media made. I am not here to fight with anyone! Just because Ranbir and I share a good chemistry does not mean I didn't get along with his girlfriend. I have no problems either with Deepika or Minissha.

It is also said that your character in the second half, Shreya, the arrogant and demanding actor takes a pot shot at Mallika Sherawat?
What are you talking about? Does she really drink only Avion? (Expensive mineral water) I think, I should become more demanding on the sets!

Have you kissed and made up with Kareena?
Frankly I have a very limited 3-year memory! So I don't even remember what happened between Kareena and me during Ajnabee. Whatever it was, I am glad that things are okay now. At Saif's birthday party she looked after me really well. She's a sweet girl and I told her, I loved her performance in Jab We Met!

It is alleged that you and Katrina Kaif are not exactly on the best of terms?
It is true that I do not know Katrina that well and I do not talk to her. When I get weird vibes from the other person I also behave accordingly. But I cannot fight with anyone verbally or physically and have never done that with her. That's not me!

You had a kissing scene with Ranbir in BAH. What was John's reaction to that?
God, he has never and will never have a problem with that! He knows, I am in a profession that demands such proximity at times.

What's with the new haircut? Is it for a film?
No! When I went to my stylist recently to get my hair coloured, I just thought of going a little wild. From the black colour I had, I changed it to burgundy and also went in for a fringe! It was a spontaneous decision and now I love it this way. But that is how I am crazy and spontaneous!

How do you view the young crop of actors today?
It took me time to get an understanding of cinema as I was very young when I entered and learnt everything on the job! And then I also had my limitations. Firstly I was not from any camp and then to weigh my options down I already had a boyfriend. But today everyone is so well prepared when they come to the industry that they don't appear like newcomers. It's wonderful to see them so confident and mature!

Are you happy with your journey?
Considering this is a hero-centric industry, I have had my share of good roles especially like the one I did in Corporate and I think I have made a reasonably good name for myself.

What is your priority today?
Love is a priority! Work and money and not enough. You need that special person, some good friends and family to share it with!

Will we see you and John in a film together?
If John and I come together it will only be for a romantic film, because that's how the audience wants to see us. And as of now, there is nothing in the offing.

Your forthcoming ventures?
I am looking forward to the release of Sudipto Chattopadhya's, Pankh in which I play an imaginary character of an actress that a young boy creates in his mind, and is in love with. Then there is Jehangir Surti's Freeze opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh in which I play a deejay. The film is 50 per cent complete. In Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film Shab Chirotro Kalpanik I play Prasenjit Chatterjee's wife who falls in love with her husband after his death.
