Selected Poems by Gulzar is a compilation of the poet’s most extraordinary work that has been translated into English. Launched on Tuesday evening at Delhi's ITC Maurya Hotel, the book has a selection from five volumes of poetry, mainly Raat Pashmine Ki and Pukhraj. “I am delighted at the translation of my poems and feel honoured that my poems have been appreciated,” said the man who has penned item numbers like Beedi and Kajra re as well as written poems that touch on simple humane issues.

The book has poems like Clothes, Fuel and Purity. “These poems represent the range and depth of his work and there is a need for people to know about his startling imageries,” said Pawan K Varma, who has translated the poems from Urdu to English.

While Gulzar refused to talk about anything apart from the book, he did speak about his idol and favourite poet. “I like Marin Sorescu. One has to read his works to know why. But any poetry that is selected by people for translation is good poetry,” said Gulzar.
