FUN UNLIMITED
Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, director Rajkumar Santoshi and producer Ramesh Taurani came calling to the Screen Chatroom, a day after the film released to packed houses. Dressed like their characters from the film – Ranbir in a bright red t-shirt and Katrina in a blue one teamed with a short skirt were complete eye-candy

Good opening
Rajkumar Santoshi:
It’s total entertainment and people have loved the film a lot. Theatres are running housefull. Good publicity and a good cast have got the people in the theatres.
Ramesh Taurani: The film is doing well both in multiplexes and single theatres across India.
Katrina Kaif: Actually placed a lot of bets.
Ramesh Taurani : I had a bet with Ranbir about the opening that it will be a bumper and another that Katrina will be nominated for all the awards.
Katrina: (Laughs) You give me the award!

Reaction to reviews
Katrina:
Everyone has been very honest; I was expecting that they would pan it. Every one can’t say wonderful things about the film.
Ranbir Kapoor: Screen will!

Wake Up Sid euphoria
Ranbir:
If the audience likes an actor’s previous film, they will be more positive about his next. Ajab... has nothing to do with Wake Up... and vice versa. Today it’s the second day and so far it is housefull everywhere. We worked very hard at the promotions. Credit goes to Ramesh Taurani because after spending so much on the film, he didn’t stop spending on promotions. He had a product he was confident about and put it across to the audience in the best possible way.

Forming the Ajab team
Ramesh Taurani:
I was in touch with Ranbir even before Saawariya had released and had narrated two scripts before this. He hadn’t liked those but when I approached him with the Ajab script, he immediately agreed to do it. Katrina has done Race with me and she also immediately agreed to do this film.
Rajkumar Santoshi: Katrina is a craze with the people. My daughter who is 9 and my mother who is 72 also are her fans. They wanted me to do a film with Katrina. I told them I would love to do but she has to agree as she is a big star. Fortunately she agreed and here she is. I went to sign Ranbir after Saawariya.
Ranbir to Rajkumar Santoshi: You had a lot of himmat.
Rajkumar Santoshi: More than himmat, it is buddhi. Both Katrina and Ranbir have a magical charm irrespective of the film. In every film that Katrina’s done, she’s stood out. Besides talent she has inherent charm and sincerity. Saawariya did not do well but I have yet to meet someone who said Ranbir was not good in it. He always stood out. They both have the X factor.
Ranbir: When I met Amitji during my visit to Bigg Boss, he was telling me that my father had told him he should work with a director called Rajkumar Santoshi. My father’s a walking-talking promotion for Rajji. Rajji is a legend. Whenever he narrates an idea he has that child-like quality. If you sit with him he will tell you eight stories just like that. All of them will be good, so it’s very tricky for an actor to choose one script because Rajji is such a good actor himself and he narrates with so much passion and honesty. The entire set up - Rajkumar Santoshi, Tips Film, Rameshji have really been supportive. He knew me pre-Saawariya and even after it was a disaster, he never changed his attitude towards me. I’ll always remember that. And of course, Katrina Kaif. I didn’t know her personally as I had only met her at social events and functions. Whenever we met, we spoke about movies, the kind of films she likes to do and the films I like to do. Somewhere we both jelled. We both like cinema, the work that we do and she works hard. I got a co-star who is equally passionate.

Revisiting the towel song in Saawariya
Ranbir:
I know there are a lot of jokes about the towel song but what I am today is because of that song. Honestly, Saawariya is the most special film because that is where I started.
Katrina : I had a Race but no towel song!
Ranbir: Unfortunate!

Hit parade
Ranbir to Katrina:
I think you should take a sabbatical, go on a holiday and give others a chance.
Katrina: After you! I don’t think it’s fair to say that. I genuinely like to work here even if my films are not hits. There are a lot of people whose films may not do well but they are still working. I am extremely blessed. Of course you want the audience to go into the theatre and like your film.
Rajkumar Santoshi: But her commitment and sincerity on the set is like a newcomer. I want Ranbir to learn this. She is like a good student of cinema. She is not taking her success for granted. She is working hard.

Favourite scenes
Katrina:
There’s this scene where I get invited to a dance party and Ranbir comes in a black suit. He wants to impress me with his dance moves. I thought it was the funniest thing I had seen in my life. It was shot at 2 am after shooting continuously for 12 hours. We were wondering when we would get to sleep. But after the scene was shot, the 100-200 dancers came on the floor and started dancing and laughing.
Ranbir: My favourite scene? When we work 120 days on a movie the entire process has so many memorable moments. The scene may be great on screen but we may not have been in a good mind set. I learnt a lot of Rajji’s nuances when it comes to comedy. The entire process has been very enriching for me. However, one scene that I liked is jo abhi film se kat gaya hai. You have seen the promos in which I am a qaidi and Katrina is the jailor. Woh mujhse meri aakhri khwaish poochti hai aur main kehta hoon ek pappi. She says, what nonsense! I say main aapki jhapi leke ek pappi lena chahta hoon, she says, “Hang him”! That was our third or fourth day of shoot but I think this scene set the tone between Katrina and me.

Grooving like Shammi Kapoor
Ranbir:
He’s been an inspiration to that form of dance because Shammi Kapoor was a rock n roll star, our own Elvis Presley. Rajji is a big SK fan. My generation is not exposed to that era of actors. All I did was to follow Rajji’s script and we had a blast doing it.

Watching with the audience
Ranbir:
We are planning to watch the film at Gaiety, Galaxy or Chandan theatres in Mumbai. I have advised Katrina to wear a burkha. But she’s reluctant and says she will manage. We are looking forward to it.
