Going cash crazy

E.M.I. is a satire that looks at the life of people in urban India who take loans to fulfill their dreams.

Anil (Aashish Chaudhry) and Shilpa (Neha Oberoi) are a young couple in love. They are hardworking, ambitious but submerged in debts. They get married and decide to buy a new house as it will be just 40 per cent more expensive than a rented house. A honeymoon, home electronics, a car and kitchenware collectively make their married life and home a happy affair. But it all comes from loans. As they struggle to repay their debts their happy matrimony begins to crumble.

Ryan (Arjun Rampal) works as a DJ but is a musician at heart. Fearless, optimistic and full of confidence, he likes playing on instincts. He falls for Nancy (Malaika Arora Khan) and despite being warned of her devious nature, he decides to elope with her.

There is also a 52-year-old middle class earner Chandrakant who takes money on credit to fulfill the ambitious needs of his young son Arjun.

On all of their backs is a recovery agent, played by Sanjay Dutt.

“E.M.I. is a modern-day film that deals with life of a common man, who always takes loans to fulfill his bigger dreams in life. Sanjay Dutt plays the role of a recovery agent.

As the title suggests, Easy Monthly Installment or E.M.I. is based on a story with which any common man could identify with. It is about the modern-day phenomenon of making assets or taking loans and then repaying back in monthly instalments.

Sanjay Dutt is a very accommodating actor. He is one actor who has worked with a lot of new directors and he is very understanding.

While filming for E.M.I. we had to re-shoot a few sequences. We needed to add a few extra scenes in the film. When Sanjay saw the rushes, he told me to give him a few days since he wanted to grow a beard for a particular scene. I suggested that he use a false beard. But Sanjay wanted it to be authentic and told me that he would grow a beard and shoot the scenes. His dedication was unbelievable.

Working with a fine group of actors made E.M.I. a great experience.”

THE BUZZ

E.M.I. is produced by Suniel Shetty and directed by debuting filmmaker Saurabh Kabra. The film is a bittersweet comedy based on the urban trends of incurring loans. Off-beat films like A Wednesday! and Welcome To Sajjanpur have done well in the recent past and Dutt will be hoping to recover from the Kidnap setback and get his year’s first hit.
