Pointing to the fact that protests by small groups were often made out to be bigger by the media, Tagore said it resulted in the banning of films like Jodhaa Akbar by state governments.
"The media should take a collective decision to blanket out such people," she said while speaking at the FICCI Frames conference being held in Mumbai.
Noted filmmaker Shyam Benegal said that with the existence of such small groups that protested against films, the CBFC certificate, which was earlier enough to allow the screening of films across the country, was no longer enough.
"With this there is no relevance of the Censor Board Certificate. It is no longer a shield against such criticism," Benegal said.
Films have become a place to get political publicity, he said.
Head of Reliance Entertainment Amit Khanna said films should be put on the union list instead of the state list to prevent state governments from preventing them from running despite having a CBFC certificate.
Speaking about self-censorship, Tagore said the Indian film industry lacked a cohesive body that represented them due to which the industry was not ready for it.
