Celebrations are on in the Jayantilaal family. It is Puspha Joshi’s birthday and the entire household is excited. Anang Desai who plays the role of the main patriarch, Jayantilaal Joshi, says, “Although mine is a Kutch-based Gujarati family we will celebrate Pushpa’s birthday in a traditional Maharashtrian way as she hails from Kolhapur.” However her husband Chandrakant Joshi (Rohitas) never likes his wife speaking in a lingo no one understands . “Our marriage is only for name sake and we have no lost love for each other,” he dismisses.
We are greeted by pretty ladies colourfully draped in navvari (nine yards) sarees. Initially, Aarti (Upasana) was not sure if they would be able to carry off the nine yards gracefully. “But it has turned out to be fun and interesting,” she smiles as the entire family dances to the famous Maharashtrian folk dance Lezim.
Pushpa is excited about celebrating her birthday for the first time. However, complications arise, when she believes that her son Pinakin will not be around. Bharti goes on “My character is very sweet. She wants to help others but ends up causing more confusion . Even in real life I am pretty disorganised and every one on the set laughs at this habit of mine,” she lets on.
Krishna who plays her 21 year innocent son Pinakin says, “He loves his mother a lot and hence cannot even think of missing her birthday. He has fallen in love with a under-aged girl and needs to wait for her to attain adulthood. Pinakin also has to earn Rs 10,000 a month to please his prospective father-in-law.” When asked whether he and Pinkain have any similarities, Krishna says that he is innocent like Pinakin, he is not as silly as his character.
As for Jayantilaal’s wife Jassumatiben (Swati Chitnis), she uses her intelligence and caring nature to solve everybody’s problems . Says Swati, “The love between me and my husband is the important glue which keep the30 members of the extended joint family together under one roof.”
Anang Desai says that one of the main reasons for taking up this show is that it explores many facets of human emotions besides comedy. “I want to do all kinds of roles. And post-Khichdi and its sequel, I have become popular as the comic grandfather.”
Shailesh Joshi ,the second son of Jayantilaal feels that the best part of this NDTV imagine daily is that it’s very realistic.”Many people come and tell us that incidents we show have actually happened in their lives,” he informs. Deepa who plays his proud wife says “Hats Off Productions always believes in making stories to which the audience can relate.”
Producer JD Majethia denies the allegation that the show is similar to his other Star Plus show Baa Bahoo Aur Baby. “Both are completely different. Baa Bahoo deals with the aspirations of a middle- and lower-class family. Jasuben... on the other hand talks about the life of members living in a joint family. The above show has a clear line of authority , while Baa... is more loosely-controlled with each member free to do his or her own thing.”
Chitnis is hopeful that that some people may get inspired by their family and try to live together again. Writer Aatish Kapadia points to another major difference “None of our characters are out and out negative. They are all human and hence have both good and bad qualities.”
Although this show does not have the machinations of a saas- bahu soap, it has its fair share of drama, Krishna says that in the entire family he and Dharmesh kaka (Anuj) cry the most. “Personally, I don’t like men crying on screen but we are the Tulsi and Parvati of our show,” he jests.
