Indian students in Australia and Amitabh Bachchan Refusal to accept honour
by Prof. P L Joshi on 2009-06-03 18:02:46.446924+05:30 Dear Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. It is of course very shocking news to read the attacks on Indian students in Australia. We, Indian parents are very much concerned and worried about this. In the past, this was not the case against Indians in Australia and this is very recent phenomena for the reasons best known to some people in Australia who are indulging such condemnable and racial acts. Australia has been known for promoting a multicultural and multilingual society. Even my son has been staying there for last five years as a senior student. To accept or refuse the honour is your personal decision after considering all the reactions and other factors. But as an academician, I suggest that you should reconsider your options and I believe that you should accept this honour which is going to be bestowed by an academic institution. We should not mix up politics and academics together. You visit will make Indian students feel at home and they need healing touch.

India's pride - Amitabh
by arun kumar on 2009-06-01 09:22:48.834472+05:30 You have defeated all negative arguments in India - Like give Australians a chance etc. - Sudhir(name may not be correct) Naik, cricketer was deported from London on charges of stealing a pair of socks, The Indian and British press digged his grave even without giving him a chance to explain his case - One Austalian is killed in Orissa - and the whole world / including PM of India believs we are still uncivilised barbarians, Australians refuse to play in India - even when they are treated as Mahrajas. Total silence now in media (except IE), CNN,BBC, Teesta Seetlwad, Arundhati - all hypocrites, who turn a blind eye to events against Indians. What is astonishing to me is total silence of Govt. of India - it simply does not exist. The Australian PM jumped into Harbhajan controversy and we all remember how biased was Australians press, when Harbhajan was punished after the slapping Sreeshanth in India. You have made us raise our head high, by refusing to be honored by racists.

Racial attacks on Indian students
by LK Nagpaul on 2009-06-01 08:23:18.857953+05:30 Big B decision not accept the doctorate in Australia is highly commendable especially when his own countrymen are subjected to racial taunts. If he had accepted then the people of India in India would not have forgiven him and call him a traitor. Wherever you live, whatever happen to any Indian anywhere in the world, hurts too much when Indians are well known for their sociable, amicable and adjustable behaviour. Good on you. I hope very soon everything will be fine because this is just handful of some miscreants who are playing havoc with the society and jealous of some community who is known for putting hard work and have brilliance in their brain to dictate the whole world.

In one single gesture you have provided the visibility and profile to the issue of racism and ill treatment meted outto Indian students in AUstralia. Your statement has provded the much needed voice and onfidence to simple eucation seeking students who normally are afraid to raise their voice or protest officially. You ave earned good ishes and support of billions of Indians whch weighs ore than one honorary doctorate. Please continue to use your global stature and influence to highlight the plight of Indian students in Autralia and elswhere. You and Ais are, after all, true "Brand India" ambassadors. by Prem Nizar hameed on 2009-06-01 02:11:24.032548+05:30 Even if laws and systems based on racial and linguistic discriminations may be gradually disappearing, the mentality behind them remains as deep rooted as ever. the underlying attitude of the west in dealing with the rest of the world springs from this attitude. The present attack on Indian students in Australia made the veteran actor to turn down the honorary doctorate. People may argue that an internationally acknowledged actor should not do that. Why? We the Indians are always a step ahead of respecting the international laws. In recent modern history, can any one point out such a single incident towards a foreigner in India, the country more often comes under the flak of the so-called casteism. Kudos to Mr. Amitabh who has registered his protest in a clear and powerful democratic way.

Big B turns down honorary doctorate by Oz university
by Ratan Gupta on 2009-05-31 19:03:59.536017+05:30 Amitabh Ji, we are not fools. You wanted to be politcally Right, nothing else. The world is suffering from deep-rooted racism and discrimination. Nobody wanted to stand for it. Such gestures are meaningless. Recently, Prince Harry of England was all over the place for raising funds for African children bla bla bla. Instead of doing that fancy and easy work, he should stand against his government for embezzelement of African resources. Can he ask his government to forgive all the loans to Africa? Oh' no, now your do not arose my nerves man. Giving up, insteading of giving charity will solve the problems. Bill Gates has given billions to the poor, but who remembers that he is the one who destroyed many of his competitors who could have employed thousands and thousands. The greatest charity is to give up your position and stand for justice. Amitabh, Gates or Harry cannot do that. We will be in problems for a while.

by Rahul Srivastava on 2009-05-31 15:22:01.571245+05:30 No doubt we have problems with cast and it is getting diluted each day as our country prospers economically. It is hard to justify what is happening in Australia on the basis of the fact that our own house is not in order. If we do not take a strong stand today and react strongly this will only escalate and make life difficult for Indians all over. I am surprised at the inferiority complex with which Mr Sugunakumar suffers and is linking a whole lot if issues like visa , begging , Amithabh and racism.

He could have even threatened to return the honourin the event of situation not showing signs of improvement. It would have been a case of holding the bull by the horn, but perhaps he has reacted rather swiftly , perhaps to let know his own countrymen about the Doctorate honour.

Racial Discrimination in Australia
by Kerisnaji Rao on 2009-05-31 06:41:52.871648+05:30 First , the Australian Universities have done nothing to help students from India. The Australian Government has done nothing about the attacks on Indian students. The police are having a hard time keeping this country free from crime. They also have very little powers. At one time I encouraged students to come to Australia to study and better themselves but now I say this "Don't come to Study In Australia". There have been too many attacks on Indian students.Parents of children studing here must go through a terrible time. The Indian Government also had done nothing in condemning Racist attacks on her Nationals.India and Indians are looked upon as weaklings after Bombay and Sri Lanka.India has to turn this around somehow.Australia has always been racist but it is getting worst now.Australia has anti racist and Anti discrimination laws in place but it has to be proved that racism and discrimination have taken place. It is very hard to prove in a Court of Law.

Now all he will do is put the lives of more successful Indian's in Australia in peril. Not contesting the brutal act I am sure there are two parts of the story.. We Indians love to shout racism the moment we get an opportunity. Such isolated incidents when there have been more than a lac of Indians living in OZ for years just does not make sense. Did the Indian government have the gall to tell the US to provide security to the Indian students when they seem to be getting killed not beaten over the last few months? IPL Elections over the media needs to find a new issue thats it and we idiots fall for it , jeopardizing the Indians living and settled in Australia over the years.Does AB apologize for all the western tourists that get ripped off, raped in India on a daily basis. The most damaging factor is the subservient and fawning attitude of the beaurocrats and the elite by making out these events as isolated Read the latest comment of our foreign affairs minister who not just played it down but an isolated incident and also said that the perception that the Indians are considered weak as a reason as well for these attacks and can there be a more shameful and idiotic statement that tows the lines of the racist Ozzie Police. Is not it amazing how we can blacken our own face. we are a civilised people and dont believe in the gun culture and expect the rule of Law to be effective, that does not mean that we are weak.

There are 80,000 Indian students in Australian and these Unis earn a lot of money from these students. The students also contribute the local economy by consuming and accommodation...but unis in Australia have failed to speak up against the "curry bashing" . The local MPs have failed as well. The Police say the attacks were not racially motivated and at the same time they say the Indians are soft target. Press report have published that some these criminals are between 12 and 16. That shows that these kids get their hate talks from home and feel if their parents discuss on that level they are in the right to attempt knifing and robbing. How SICK is the Aussie society!? well done boss
by sarma on 2009-05-30 15:35:15.259617+05:30 a very wise decision. every indian must follow it. indians must have the feelings for fellow indians. if australia is so called devoloped country, it looks like it lost its common sense and the children of australia are being brought up in a very unfriendly animal mentality atmosphere. their parents are to blame. australians should realise the importance of hard work, human values and achievement through sufferings and hard work. australians got everything easily, so they started devoloping animal instinct. indian govt should issue guidelines strictly to the counsulates to protect its citizens under any circumstances and that is the first step towards improving relations. most of the country people had a doubt about the australians being rouges and ruffians and the australians removed the doubt in the minds of world citizens by these repeated animal type of attacks on indians. the sad part for an NRI is he has to be on his own as indian govt , as usual is soft on anything.

Well done
by Srini on 2009-05-30 15:35:09.349768+05:30 Well done Mr Bachan. As always our silent Prime Minister and our puppet President probably think that they have more important things to do! This is a serious issue and imagine the hue and cry (rightly in my view)if this had happened to an Aussie in India. Our so called leaders ( Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Mrs Patil) have not even come out openly to high light the issue. Do these people think that coming out openly and asking the Aussies to take immediate action is a protocol deviation or do they think that this beneath them to comment on issues like this!! They probably think that these racist killings of Indian students is an internal issue for the Australians to sort out. Indian Politicians Wake up please!!!!!

Racism has no place in civilised society.
by Bhanu on 2009-05-30 15:30:17.990996+05:30 It is the right decision by big'B' as there should be no place for racism in any form or manner any where in the civilized world. The countries like Australia, UK and USA should take extra precaution in dealing with such type of cases and should go on a short of awareness programmes about the role of Indians in their economy. Any action of racial hatred should be dealt with firmly and Govt. of India should also come out with strong reaction on such issues. None of the religion and society preaches in tolerance against any other re religion or race. The decision of Mr. Bachchan is laudable.
