"Shyambabu observes humour in relationships, innocence in society. He is an interesting story teller and for those who know him, his decision to direct a comedy like ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ did not surprise," said Ila, who was introduced by Benegal in his film "Mandi" more than two decades ago.
She said 'Mandi' based on life in a brothel was also a satire on society. "His definition of comedy is not the forced humour of slapstick comedy. 'Mandi' was ahead of times while 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' was long overdue and has come at the right time," she said.
She recalled her association of 26 years with Benegal saying that people may judge him a very serious filmmaker, but he is young at heart and full of life.
"I have worked with him in 'Discovery of India', 'Suraj Ka Satva Ghoda', 'Yatra' and 'Bose: The Forgotten Hero.' He treated Shreyas Talpade and Amrita Rao well and made them feel comfortable. Initially, they were very scared. He thought them how to approach acting with knowledge and dignity," she said.
Ila said as compared to the large number of corporate houses making their presence felt in the film industry and prepared to take risks for good meaningful cinema, Shyam Benegal has struggled hard to reach the position where he is today on his own terms.
"In fact, he introduced co-operative financing through his film 'Manthan'. As many as five lakh farmers of Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation had financed the film," she recalled.
Replying to questions, Ila said 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' was a delightful satirical take on a contemporary Indian village and makes a comment on different prevailing social issues.
She felt rural India had more stories to offer than cities and it is reflected in cinema as well. Speaking about her character she said she essayed the role of a woman who is obsessed about getting her daughter married.
Ila said despite doing films, she prefers to give priority to her folk music and live shows. "I am known in the film industry because of my folk music. I like to keep a fine balance between the two," she added.
