After a brilliant debut with Chittiram Pesudadhadi, director Mysskin comes up with one more underworld tale for Nemichand Jhabak starring his favourite actor Narain playing a riff-raff-turned police officer, Sathyavan, son of a head constable (M.S. Bhaskar). He has a good friend Kripa Shankar (Ajmal) living in police quarters whose sole aim is to become a police sub-inspector. While Sathya whiles away his time at the local bar with friends or getting into street brawls, Kripa works studiously towards his goal. Chided by his father for his unruly behaviour, in a fit of rage, Sathya decides to become a police officer and does achieve his goal thanks to an influential relative. To his dismay, Kripa fails in the exam. That sets a reversal of roles while Sathya turns a serious and sincere trainee sub-inspector, a dejected Kripa takes to the bottle. He thinks that Sathya’s fraudulent ways in getting the job made him lose the opportunity. But his sister Uthara (Vijayalakshmi) tries to make him see reason. She takes a liking to Narain. At this stage Kripa is lured by the gangster Daya (Prasanna) who along with the local thug Logu (Pandiarajan) resorts to kidnapping of girls for ransom. Daya has a score to settle with Sathyavan and he decides to use Kripa against him. Sathya is shocked when he comes to know that his best friend Kripa is with the dreaded rapist-gangster. Then the drama unfolds travelling from the dark alleys of Chennai towards the lush green fields for a thriller like finish.

Narain and Ajmal played the reversal of roles to the hilt. Known for his soft romantic roles as a lead star, Prasanna is a revelation in a negative role. Vijayalakshmi as the silent lover displays the right emotions. Despite minor goofing in the screenplay, Mysskin keeps the viewers interest in tact in this 190-minute gang-war movie without a trace of gory violence or skin show thus making it a film for the entire family of audience. Sundar C. Babu’s background score gels with the director’s vision and the visuals of cinematographer Mahesh Muthusamy. One feels the songs are an unnecessary intrusion into this action flick.

Valluvan Vasuki: Sentimental saga
Falling in love is considered a sin in a village and the village head (Ponvannan) declares that any one falling in love metes out with severe punishment after an incident that happened in his family. The village head has a close friend Ananda Konar (Ranjith). His world revolves around his daughter Vasuki (debutante Swetha). Cupid strikes her in the form of Valluvan (newcomer Sathya) the newly entered borewell operator to the village. Soon the village head discovers their love and the boy is punished by the villagers. Caught between her father’s love and the lover, Vasuki says that she will abide by whatever her father says. But she is unable to forget Valluvan. Ananda Konar starts looking for a bridegroom for her. But Kalyanam (director Bharathi) son of the village head spoils the alliances with an aim to unite Valluvan with Vasuki. How this happens forms the rest of the story.
Ranjith takes the lead among the performers with a sensitive portrayal though tends to be loud at times. Bharathi has succeeded in extracting the best performances from the debut hero and heroine. S. A. Rajkumar besides composing five different tunes for the songs makes an appearance in a song sequence and pens a lyric.

Verdict
One star for K. Bharathi for playing the simpleton Kalyanam besides getting good performances from Sathya and Swetha.
