Anil Kapoor reveals how 'Slumdog Millionaire' fell into his lap

Slumdog millionaire
How did the role come about?

I have very vague memories of having received an SMS from Danny Boyle. It didn’t immediately register that I was being approached by the famous director but my kids were extremely excited when I mentioned the SMS to them. In fact, they pushed me to explore the project. I went through the script and the role and really liked it.

Were you familiar with Boyle’s films?

I’d seen The Beach but only for Leonardo DiCaprio. And I was familiar with Trainspotting. And though I had the inkling that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do a Hollywood film, trust me, I had no idea how big Danny Boyle is when I took up the project.

Then what made you sign on?

This film’s a first in many ways. It’s my first English film and it’s my first Hollywood project. Also, not many commercial Bollywood actors have been approached by Hollywood directors in the past—most have been ‘arty’.

What is your role like?

I play Prem, the host and the producer of the game show, in the film. It’s a character in an urban setting and very believable—I could relate to him. When I read the script I realised Prem’s role has many layers. He also has shades of grey—he’s a tad insecure of the Dev Patel’s character despite the fact that he himself has risen from poverty.

Slumdog Millionaire has used Kaun Banega Crorepati as reference point. Did you use Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan as reference points too or did you reinvent the character?

I hardly had a reference point because playing host in only a part of my role. There’s a lot about Prem as a human being in the film and that of course could not have been derived. Even as a host, I have attempted my own style and Danny gave me enough freedom to do so.

The film’s made with primarily Indian cast and crew. What do you think works for the film and makes it award-worthy?

I think the simplicity of it. When I saw the film for the first time I realised that the story is very basic and the film is made with minimum extravaganza — it’s a film you and I could’ve made. But a closer look reveals the fabulous technical skills involved: the background score, A R Rahman’s soundtrack, the editing, the lighting and the shooting locales.

What was Boyle like?

He knows how to get the best out of his team effortlessly. And he has a great directorial sense which is evident in the way Danny has conceived each scene. The film has many sub-plots but Danny has managed to seamlessly stitch them together, which speaks a lot about his directorial potential.

Anil Kapoor by Grace on 2009-05-14 23:50:39.328777+05:30 I find that it is not right what Anil did with that little fellow, he used him to get the big hit of the movie and then dump the little guy and don't give him and his family what he promise them. I think that Anil should think about his children them, that he wouldn't like for someone to do that to them. I think this would be a curse that would come upon him and his family, if he does not take care or give what belongs to this little guy that helps him make the movie to be a hit. There is a God that seen everything, how he treats the poor and give to them due to there labour. So Anil should watch out now that he doesn't loose everything he has in one day. Because what ever you sow that you shall reap!!I don't know how he is able to sleep good at night, knowing he didn't treat someone the way he supose to treat them.

Why so angry? by Zahra on 2009-03-05 02:46:18.773575+05:30 I don't think this movie is at all negative towards india, My friend is a british indian and she told me that when she goes on holiday to india that is how the conditions are in india however that is the truth. Movies such as green street don't show England in a good way either however because i live here i know there's good and bad sides to england. Its the same with every country including india, there are good and bad things in every country however when a movie is released showing the in's and out's of a country why should we be angry against it. i don't recall us british bing outraged when green street was released so why are people saying that Anil Kapoor is jeopardising his own culture? He's an actor at the end of the day, he ACTS, that is his role.

I disagree by Stephanie on 2008-12-27 13:13:21.348717+05:30 Wow, I completely disagree with the comments which see the movie as being a negative to India. I personally am not from India and found that the movie was not only beautiful, but that India through its lens was breathtaking. I get that it does not depict India for all that it is, but that's not the point of the movie and I think for anyone to believe it's even possible to encapsulate India, a country so rich in culture in 1.5h is in itself, quite ridiculous. The 'this is America line' is not and does not show beliefs of American superiority presently, but rather that particular character's smugness/ignorance. If anything, it's commentary on that particular Western perspective.I get the feeling that many who walked away from this film in North America and such didn't remember the poor children or the violence of India, but rather, the immense colours, frenetic environments, and a bold sense of life and living. And of course, that wonderful love story. -an Canadian viewer

A hasty decision by PP TALWAR on 2008-12-18 08:35:35.263962+05:30 All said and done, Anil Kapoor an Indian bollywood star has fallen for money, jeopardising own country's rich traditions, culture and prestige. The script on the face value may be appealing, but it is a sugar coated bitter pill which is meant to show India in poor light. Anil kapoor may have a second thought about his participation in this venture.

I agree by Saurav on 2008-12-16 20:44:13.825508+05:30 Robin,PLease respect other's opinion rather than trivialise the discussion as cribbing. And yes everything, the potrayal, the name slumdog, everything about this movie is in a bad taste. Yes its a movie, which could have been made with more sensitivity.

Slumdog by Sridhar on 2008-12-16 13:04:20.542505+05:30 Why is he name 'Slumdog' and not Slumboy whch would have been more dignified. Are Indians whether poor or rich equal to slumdogs. Why did not Anil Kapoor object to this title

1 why slum dog?
by giri on 2008-12-16 15:57:44.026274+05:30i believe that the word "slumdog" is a rather sarcastic way of portraying how the society looks down upon the under privileged. It is an insult to the society rather than the slum dweller himself.

TO My fellow countrymen by Vaibhav on 2008-12-16 11:28:07.870125+05:30 Just showing one side of the truth so serve an ulterior motive and get accolades from the western media.Mr. Anil Kapoor, stop bending on your knees to Hollywood. The role you performed , a gameshow host, required neither any special acting skill. nor much effort. You have been and are a very good actor and ou dont need to stoop so low to get into limelight.Floks, I urge you to see this movie, and decide for yourself

To my fellow countrymen:The truth about this movie by Vaibhav on 2008-12-16 11:23:11.099014+05:30 2) Anil Kapoor, perhaps posing as Amitabh Bacchan of the Kaun Banega Kaorpati fame, keeps on humiliating the contestent as "Chaiwallah" . And the "insensitive indian public is shown laughing. Friends, yes, poor are looked down upon, in any society, but contrast this to reality. The wasy MR. Bachchan , with upmost humility, respect and dignity conducted the actual show.3) Indian Police is shown to beat up kids on their whim, and one kid is saved by an Americanwho says "This is the real America", and giving a great advertisement of American values of generosity, kindness to the uncivilized, barbaric Indian Policemen. 4) Even most of the actors in the movie are borrowed Americanised desis, who speakenglish with an American accent.5) Yes, and this shows Hindus killing Muslims with the diety of Lord Rama in the foreground. A country where Da vinci code is banned, showing the majority religion in poor light is in very bad taste. Again , the liberals will argue about pros and cons.

To fellow countrymen: The truth about this movie by Vaibhav on 2008-12-16 11:13:59.755234+05:30 Dear Fellow Indians,See thismovie, and you wont be surprised it made it to the awards. This movie shows India and Indians in very poor light.People will argue, "these things happen in India". Yes, friends, corruption, slums, poverty, exploitation of children are undeniable dark truths about India. But, not agod thing about India? Yes, isnt that exactly what the west wants to hear about. Wonder why likes of Arundhati Roy are poster journalists of the west?Yes, show India and Indians in poor light and win these awards. The firang director and mostly American born desis stoop down very low to show India in such a poor light, that it will get any Indian worth his salt angered. While there is not enough space to point out every single insult to India in this movie, but consider these.1) The main charactar is on the verge of becoming a milionaire. What happens next? The police pics him and gives him electric shocks! and a treatment which was not meeted out to the terrorist after Mumbai.
