When terror calls

A Wednesday tells the story of a set of dramatic events that unfold between 2 and 6 pm on a Wednesday evening.

Prakash Rathod (Anupam Kher), Commissioner of Police, Mumbai gets a call demanding the release of four militants in lieu of information on bombs that a man has planted in various parts of Mumbai. At first, Prakash suspects it to be a prank call but his doubts are dispelled once he actually finds a bomb planted in the police station right opposite his Headquarters.

Rathod gets a team of his best men together and taps all his resources to track down the caller. He even hires a 17-year-old hacker to help the team trace the calls and the location of the man.

Naina Roy (Deepal Shaw), a news channel reporter and Arif (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Jai (Amir Bashir), Rathod’s trusted cops, are also drawn into the situation of handing over the four militants.

“The story of this film happens on a Wednesday. Anupam Kher plays the Police Commissioner and he narrates a case that is unregistered and has no mention in any police record.

The greatest thing of working on A Wednesday was working with a great set of actors. Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah are veterans and having them in my film was great. The ease with which I got them on board was unbelievable. I just sent them the copies of the script and they were raring to go.

Like all contemporary thrillers, A Wednesday is sans any interruptions in the form of on-screen songs. The format of the story didn’t have any scope for singing and dancing. Everything happens within a span of four hours and even this period is condensed into a two-hour screenplay.

The film has a good story and I felt it needed to be told. It talks about the choices people make during testing times, in this case, during an act of terrorism.”

THE BUZZ
A Wednesday is a film based on terrorism. It might be compared to the recently-released film Mumbai Meri Jaan, which was based also based on the July 2006 Mumbai train blasts. Though the film does not have much commercial viability the highlight of this film is its cast. Audiences can expect Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah to deliver weighty performances.
