Born on 7th November 1971 in Kolkata, this Bengali actress has also made a niche for herself in Hindi cinema. Though she comes from a family interested in arts, Rituparna is the first from her family to take up movies as a career. She learnt painting at a school called Chitrangshu and studied at Carmel Convent School and later in Lady Brabourne College from where she completed her graduation. She took up movies when she was doing her post graduation in History and had to leave it midway.

She started her career in 1994 with the Bengali film ‘Swet Patharer Thala’, the film got a National Award and made her the reigning queen of Tollywood. She attained commercial success with films like ‘Moner Manush’, ‘Sangsar Sangram’, ‘Swami Kano Ashami’, ‘Sudhu Ekbar Balo’, ‘Swamir Adesh’, ‘Tumi Ele Tai’, ‘Swasurbari Zindabad’, ‘Akrosh’, ‘Hungama’, ‘Chander Bari’ etc.

She also gained success in parallel cinema with the likes of ‘Dahan’, ‘Utsab’, ‘Paromitar Ek din’, ‘Mandyo Meyer Upakhyan’, ‘Aalo’, ‘Devipakshya’, ‘Dwitiya Basanta’, ‘Byatikrami’, ‘Nishijapon’, ‘Sangshoy’ and ‘Anuranann’ in which she acted with Rahul Bose.

In Hindi cinema she is best remembered for her role as the beautiful wife in ‘Main, Meri Patni aur Woh’.

She married childhood sweetheart Sanjay Chakraborty in 1999.
