




He is one of the most respected actors in the industry today due to his roles in movies like ‘Satgati’, ‘Gandhi’, ‘The Jewel in the Crown’ and ‘City of Joy’. Since many of his movies have had widespread circulation abroad, he has received tremendous recognition from Western directors.
His performance in ‘Aakrosh’, in which he played a police inspector, won him the National Award for the Best Actor. He has been honoured twice with the National Award for the brilliant acting skills. Om Puri also has to his credit the Filmfare Award of India. One of the most powerful performances of his career has been in ‘East is East’, where his portrayal of a complicated character won him a nomination for Best Actor in the reputed international BAFTA Awards of 2000.
After 1990, Om ventured into commercial films after dominating parallel cinema. He also ventured into TV eventually. The TV serial in Hindi was called ‘Kakkaji Kaheen’. The serial was spoof on politicians.
