Screen - The Business of entertainment

IT’S A WOMAN’S WORLD

Set Max celebrated International Women’s Week with five woman achievers who had excelled in a man’s world. Titled Hum Kissi Se Kum Nahin, the programme featured film director, Tanuja Chandra, petrol pump attendent Manisha Attaram, Indian Airlines pilot, Sangeeta Kolbekar, cool cab driver Kanchan Gawde and scholar in Vedic Maths, Deepa Jewani.

Tanuja Chandra who has directed movies like Dushman and Sangarsh, confessed that initially distributors used to think she would make a boring film on women till she proved otherwise. “In our country, people worship Godesses like Durga Mata and Kali and yet hurt, burn and kill women close to them,” Tanuja rues, advising her fellow women not to quietly submit to the opression but surge ahead in life.

Manisha has been working in a petrol pump for the last six years and insists that she’s been accepted in her unusual role. “Women should come out of their houses and prove themselves equal to men,” she urges.

Sangeeta is flying high today thanks to her dad who’s also a pilot. The family has adjusted very well to her erratic hours. Sangeeta’s ideal woman is her mother and she insists that today women are not just working with men but proving themselves to be better than them.

Kanchan, our first lady cool cab driver, was inspired by her husband to take up this rather unusual profession and today has three cabs of her own and the support of all her cabbie colleagues.

Deepa topped in a Vedic Matha compeition that drew contestants from all over the world. She was the youngest and the only female participant. Not surprisingly, her muse is maths whiz, Shakuntala Devi. Deepa thinks that it’s unfair that we celebrate only one day of the year as Women’s Day. “The rest of the year is for men. Why?” she asks. “I know women have been tagged the weaker sex but I believe that men who say sauch things are the ones with a weak mind.” Touche!

POLICE ACADEMY ON ZEE ENGLISH

For those who haven’t seen the laugh riot Police Academy or its sequels, the good news is that Zee English is bringing these in a serialised form to our living rooms every Saturday from March 17 at 8 pm. Another classic that will be screened on the channel is Jane Austen’s Emma that has won Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. Emma will be shown on the Saturday Special slot on March 17 and March 24.

A RA RA RA, A STAR IS BORN
No one had any doubts that Ketki Dave was a versatile actress. She made quite an impression in Hasreatein in which she played Shyam’s best buddy who’s quite the bold, new woman. In a surprising turnaround, she is now the Junagadh ki chachi in Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi who’s made A ra ra ra the chant of every household. KSBKBT has made Ketki an instantly recognisable name and suddenly producers are queueing up her door with new offers everyday. Ketki is suddenly appearing in a lot of ads and is even hosting shows. She recently anchored the Screen Awards on STAR and the unanimous verdict was that she was “oh-so-cute”. A ra ra ra!

THE BUSY BACHCHAN
The pace has really hotted up for the Big B. In fact, his schedule must be giving stars half his age, a complex. His day reportedly begins at 7 a.m. and ends close to mid-night. There are days when he shoots three episodes a day for Kaun Banega Crorepati. And KBC is not the only thing that keeps him occupied. Bachchan has suddenly signed a spate of films. And Ek Rishta- Bond of Love, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, All The Best and Aks are enough to keep him working almost round-the-clock.

JCPK’S NEW PLANS
KBC may well have decided to stretch into the weekends but JCPK does not intend taking on KBC during week days. May be they’re still wary of taking on the Big B head on. The special episode of KBC featuring Madhuri Dixit and Sachin Tendulkar, did affect JCPK’s ratings confesses a Sony official. But they are not unduly worried about it. “We will also have special episodes but not like KBC where stars take the IQ test. We’ll bring in performing aristes whose work will be only to entertain,” reveals Rekha Nigam, director programming, Sony. Last week they had a special episode on Holi and though they didn’t have any special guests, a mast mast Govinda was enough to whip up a festive fever. He sang, danced and as usual had the audience clapping and cheering enthusiastically.
