The Vengaboys party in Delhi

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reuters

NEW DELHI: The Vengaboys, a Dutch band, whose songs "Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!" and "We Like To Party" have burned Indian charts, set thousands of cheering fans in Delhi in a party mood on Monday.

Ten thousand fans, a relatively modest number for pop shows in India, swayed with their hands in the air while hooting, when asked to "make some noise for the Vengaboys."

The Vengaboys, pronounced as "Bengaboys", are immensely popular in India, with their first album - "The Party Album" - selling close to 650,000 copies, making it the highest selling international album, the recording company Sony Music said in a statement.

"People in India love everything that has to do with dancing and singing and that's what we are about," lead singer Kim told reporters at a press conference before the show. "We are about having fun."

International pop stars belting out music with catchy beats, have found increasing acceptance with the modern Indian youth in recent years.

According to Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony Music India, Danish band "Aqua," with their famous "Barbie Girl" song sold 320,000 copies of their album "Aquarium" - the second highest selling international album in India in the nineties. In contrast albums of international pop icons like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears grossed around 100,000 copies each.

Lead singer Kim, dressed in a black bustier with tassels and matching black pants was the crowd favourite among the group of four.

"Kim of course!" said 25 year-old Gaurav Sharma when asked who his favourite group member was. "She's beautiful, sexy and dances very well."

The band performed Indian favourites including "To Brazil," "We Like To Party" and "We're Goin' to Ibiza" with the crowd matching the artistes step for step.

They performed for over an hour and just when the crowd thought the show was over, the group jumped back on stage responding to a roar of "encore" from the audience.

"It was a really good experience. I love the group because their songs and beats are very good, and the group members are also very friendly," said Ten Zim Lhaho.

The band performed in Madras on Sunday to a crowd of 15,000 and had visited India last year as well when they performed in Bangalore and Bombay.

The Vengaboys - Kim, Denice, Roy and Yoricks - got together with producer-DJs Danski and Delmundo in 1995 and performed at "infamous illegal beach parties" in Spain before their single "Up and Down" hit international charts in 1997.

"We are just four kids who happened to be very, very lucky to be in this situation," said Kim, when asked how the band got together.
