Ex-Spice girl Geri gets driving ban

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reuters

LONDON: Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell was banned from driving Wednesday for approaching an English town at double the speed limit in her sports car.

During a brief court appearance at Watford the pop singer was handed a six-week ban and ordered to pay a 400 pound ($580) fine and 35 pounds costs. Halliwell, 28, last month pleaded guilty in writing to driving her Aston Martin at 60 mph in a 30 mph zone toward Watford last October. But magistrates insisted she attend court in person on Wednesday morning for sentencing. Wearing a long cream leather coat and high-heel shoes, the blonde singer spoke quietly to confirm her name, date of birth and address.

Her lawyer said that she was "very sorry" for the offence. After the hearing Halliwell left the building accompanied by bodyguards. Halliwell found fame with the all-female Spice Girls, promoting the cause of "Girl Power" and wearing a Union Jack dress. However she left the chart-topping group in May 1998 to pursue a solo career and has since scored three No. 1 hits in her own name. Her fine matched the punishment given to Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth's daughter, Tuesday for doing 93 mph in a 70 mph zone, although the princess escaped a ban.
