Chandrakant Mandre
passes away
Veteran actor Cahndrakant Mandre, who was also a well-known painter, died in Kolhapur on February 17. He was 88. Beginning his acting career in 1936 in Baburao Painter’s Sawakari Paash, Chandrakant acted with distinction in more than 80 Marathi and 20 Hindi films, his last screen appearance being in the Amol Palekar-directed Bangarwadi in 1995. He essayed all types of roles in a career spanning six decades but is remembered most in the roles of the rugged village patil he portrayed in several films with a predominantly rural backdrop as also the roles of Shivaji Maharaj in some historicals, including Bhalji Pendharkar’s Chhatrapati Shivaji. Gopal Tukaram Mandre in real life, he was given the screen name Chandrakant by Bhalji. Apart from Chhatrapati Shivaji, some of his other memorable starrers are Shejari, Raja Gopichand, Thoratanchi Kamala, Bharat Bhet, Ramrajya, Meeth Bhakar, Jai Malhar and Maanacha Paan. He was conferred an honorary degree (D Litt) by Shivaji University.

Painting was his first love and exhibitions of his work have been held in all the principal cities of Maharashtra, and also in the United States, Great Britain and France. The Chandrakant Mandre Kala Academy was set up in Kolhapur in 1997 where Chandrakant himself taught the basics of painting to students wno insisted on learning the art under his guidance.

Ranjan Salvi dead
Well-known choreographer of Marathi films, Ranjan Salvi, died in Pune on February 16. He was 72 and leaves behind his wife, two sons, a daughter and grandchildren. During a career spanning 35 years, he worked as choreographer in about 175 Marathi films including Pinjra, Chaani, Kela Ishara Jata Jata, Sawal Maza Aika, Sugandhi Katta and Sangu Kashi Mee.
