Shararat in May

Gurudev Bhalla’s film, tentatively titled Shararat, will be Abhishek Bachchan’s next release — the film will hit theatres in May. Presented by Jayantilal Gada and produced by Suraj Bhalla under the banner of Work Station, it is directed by Gurudev Bhalla with music by Sajid-Wajid, and has model Hrishitaa Bhatt as leading lady.
 


Germany toasts Studio Link

Studio Link, the leading publicity designers who have won the Screen Videocon Awards twice, have added one more feather to their cap — the Silver Medal at the first ever The Best of the World’s Biggest Calendars held in Germany recently. The Studio Link’s calendar, “The Journey of Life,” painted in eye-catching detail, depicts the philosophy of the Vedas — on life in four stages. The award was presented on February 19.

 


Abhishek to play Azad

Abhishek Bachchan is to play Chandrashekhar Azad in a multimillion dollar Hollywood production, The Last Revolutionary. The film, to be directed by Priyadarshan, has music by AR Rahman and sets designed by Sabu Cyril. The film will be produced by Columbia Tristar in association with Ripples Picture Entertainment.

 
 

Surinder Kapoor, AIFPC chief
Surinder Kapoor was unanimously elected president of the All India Film Producers Council at its 22nd AGM on February 28. Other office bearers are Pahlaj Nihalani, Ramesh Taurani and Yash Chopra.

 
 
Aankh Micholi rolls
Dream Merchants Enterprises’ Aankh Micholi, jointly produced by Nitin Manmohan and Ram Gopal Varma, was launched on March 3 with an 18-day shoot. Directed by debutant Taufeeq Baraskar, the film stars Nana Patekar, Urmila Matondkar and Saif Ali Khan and has music by Sandesh Shandilya.
Docufest Vaastav on March 8
The three-day documentary film festival, Vaastav — The Reality, opens at The Club, Mumbai on March 8. Coinciding with the International Women’s Day (March 8), the festival hopes to bring about an awareness of women’s issues in India.
Japan invites Waheeda
Waheeda Rehman is a special invitee to the Japan Film Festival which will screen a Guru Dutt retrospective. Waheeda is the heroine of five of the seven films Guru Dutt made. A Waheeda retrospective is also being planned by the Bimal Roy Foundation in Mumbai where Waheeda will be felicitated.
Mohabbatein audio crosses milestone
HMV celebrated the sale of over 50 lakh cassettes of Yash Chopra’s Mohabbatein. Harish Dayani, of HMV, in whose house the celebrations were held, denied there was a downward trend in the sales of audio cassettes.

Varma to sign Mohan Lal?

Ram Gopal Varma is attempting a casting coup: talks are on with Mohan Lal, the superstar of Malayalam cinema, for a Hindi film to co-star Ajay Devgan.
BBC Award for Gulshan
Gulshan Grover has won the BBC Asia Award for his contribution to cinema. The award will be presented to him by the Prime Minister of UK, Tony Blair on March 25.
