Will
FTV be banned in India?
There is a possibility that FTV will not
be banned. But it may be warned not to telecast material offensive
to Indian culture
Senior Official, I&B Ministry
The government has still to arrive at a decision regarding
the future of FTV (Fashion TV) of France in India. Members
of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee (PCC) attached
to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting were expected
to view 14 specially recorded tapes of various programmes
telecast on FTV, and arrive at a decision about whether the
FTV was offensive to Indias cultural traditions, by
the first week of February.
The 14 tapes were specially recorded by the Central Monitoring
Service (CMS) in Delhi and contain 90 minutes of recording
of programmes aired by FTV showing dresses designed by leading
names in the international fashion world. In addition to the
14 tapes CMS has also sent a report on the objectionable portions
in FTVs contents.
Although Sushma Swaraj, the Minister of Information &
Broadcasting, has expressed her unhappiness over the contents
of the channel, leading Indian designers have protested against
the governments attempt to ban FTV in India. In recent
times, works of leading Indian designers like Ritu Beri, Tarun
Tahilyani and Rishi Kumar have been telecast by the 24-hour
FTV.
Sources say that the French embassy in India is also trying
to convince the government that FTV should not be banned.
A senior official in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting
when asked about the future of the channel in India said that
there is a possibility that FTV will not be banned. But it
may be warned not to telecast material offensive to Indian
culture.
In the past a Russian channel, TB5 was banned by the Information
& Broadcasting Ministry under the then I&B minister,
Arun Jaitley.
