The new
millennium has hardly opened on an auspicous note for the
movie trade, considering the dismal showing of the current
releases. With all its hype, Raju Chacha has not been able
to muster its strength at the turnstiles. Its a setback
to Ajay Devgan and his distribution office. However, there
is a silver lining: the film has been placed 12th in the UK
box-office, collecting 167,354 pounds from 23 screens. But
in North America, it is placed 37th, collecting $ 123,989
from 35 screens.
As it is, cinemas all over witnessed a steep drop in attendance
by 30 per cent owing to the rampant cable piracy which the
government has not been able to curb effectively. It appears
the state governments will wake up to the menace only when
the cinemas start closing down.
