Screen - The Business of entertainment

A new world of entertainment

Just how far the term entertainment has stretched beyond one’s imagination is evident as soon as one steps into the sprawling R World Multiplex complex in Gandhinagar, a half hour’s drive from Ahmedabad. The complex which was inaugurated on Diwali Day with Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein, is spread over 12 acres, houses three cinema houses and can pack in as many as 1500 people at a time. The spacious parking lot can accommodate 400 cars. The three screen multiplex boasts of screens that have been specially imported from the UK. The Sony dynamic digital system on an 8-track format match with the JBL speakers has been specially imported from the US. The digital projector installed in the complex makes it possible to view the same film on all three screens simultaneously. There’s a VIP lounge that affords the very important people complete privacy and ‘Love Seats’ to give couples a feeling of intimacy. This is like no cinema hall you have seen before.

Entering the futuristic complex is an experience in itself. As you pass into the spacious foyer you’re greeted by laser lights and state-of-the-art digital displays. Huge television monitors positioned at the top, screen popular TV programmes. Inside the hall neon lights streak across the high ceiling. Small laser star lights keep changing colour under your feet. The walls are brightly coloured. And watching a film in these rather unusual surroundings is a treat.

If you’re not a film buff, there are bowling alleys, a cyber cafe, virtual reality games, a music store and a gift shop, food courts, Go Karting, kids’ screen, bumping cars and many such entertainment avenues to keep you delightfully busy the whole day without making too big a hole in your pocket.

Raj Multiplex Pvt Ltd., who are the driving force behind this entertainment avenue, have been into exhibitions for the last 25 years. It is their years of work and feel for the business that has culminated in a multiplex that is the first of its kind in Asia. "We were very confident it would be a success from the very first day. There is no other way to lure people who are hungry for entertainment," says Ajay Chudasama, the Managing Director. When quizzed about the total investment on the infrastructure, he admits that costs had crossed the Rs. 25 crores mark. But he insists it is worth the expenditure. His experiment has certainly come as a blessing to producers and the distributors who have for years now been complaining about the lack of modern exhibition avenues and we hope it’ll set the trend for many such multiplexes in the days to come.
