B4U will beam movies on Doordarshan

According to the new agreement between DD and B4U, the latter is not expected to pay any minimum guarantee (MG) to DD. The agreement also clarifies that no bank guarantee is required from B4U

B4U, which has a vast collection of Hindi films, has entered into an agreement with Doordarshan to air its movies on DD’s National (DD1) and International (DD World) channels.

According to the deal signed recently, B4U movies will be aired on DD, every third Friday of the month and also on all national and gazetted holidays. The movies, shown under a slot titled B4U Movie of the Month, will be aired at 10 p.m.

For the past several months, Doordarshan was finding it difficult to get good (read mega) movies for telecast on its channels. NFDC, which still markets the feature films on DD, was the sole agency which provided films to the national broadcaster. But NFDC’s repertoire of lacklustre films did not give leave much choice for DD. Moreover, when DD’s contract with private marketing agencies like Creative Eye expired, the network’s dependency on NFDC increased.
It may be mentioned here that Creative Eye earned as much as Rs. 1.25 crore per movie for DD, when it marketed films like Sholay and Tezaab for the national broadcaster. These companies also paid a huge amount - in some cases more than Rs. 1 crore, as minimum guarantee (MG) to DD.

But according to the new agreement between DD and B4U, the latter is not expected to pay any minimum guarantee (MG) to DD. The agreement also clarifies that no bank guarantee is required from B4U.

The marketing of feature films will be done by B4U and not by DD and the revenue will be shared equally (50:50) by DD and B4U.

That means, it is entirely upto B4U how much revenue it finally generates for DD. For the latter, revenue sharing is the only way to profit from the agreement.
It is no doubt an achievement for the Kishore Lulla promoted B4U, which has a library of over a 1,000 Hindi movies. With this agreement, B4U is certainly going to extend its brand equity on a terrestrial network like DD1.

The movies B4U is planning to beam on DD includes all Shah Rukh Khan starrers including Baadshah and Dil Se and other mega movies. But how far B4U could be successful in generating ‘mega’ revenue for DD still remains to be seen, especially when the first movie marketed by B4U on Dassera Day on DD-1 generated just Rs. 30 lakhs for DD.
