cannot be wished away, Jaitley tells film industry
If
the film industry was badly hit by the cable TV then the solution
for it would be to take advantage of all the media by developing
a fair and honest relationship with them
Union
Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley called
upon the film industry to co-exist and take optimum advantage
of the emerging technologies like the Internet, cable and
satellite TV networks by adopting a fair and a mutually beneficial
commercial regimen.
Addressing a meeting of prominent Telugu film industry personalities
and the members of the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce,
he referred to the problems faced by them and pointed out
that television and particularly the cable TV had become a
hard reality and could not be wished away.
He said the real answer to the problems faced by the film
industry lay in having an expanded bandwidth as the era of
convergence of technologies had arrived. If the film industry
was badly hit by the cable TV then the solution for it would
be to take advantage of all the media by developing a fair
and honest relationship with them. Jaitley said the governments
role was limited to enacting laws, implementing fiscal and
tax policies and creating a fair competitive environment.
Stating that the entertainment industry had an enormous revenue
earning potential, he said it was the biggest earner in the
USA. In this context, he said the Indian film industry could
earn thousands of crores of rupees in the wake of the Union
governments decision to allow private FM radio stations.
Licenses were already given for starting private FM channels
in 40 cities and another 60 cities would have such channels
by December. The film industry could earn enormous revenue
as its music would be the main content provider for these
channels, he added.
