Discovery
brings dinos to television
Remember
Tyrannosaurus, Diplodocus and Stegosaurus? Well, they and
their other dinosaur cousins are back from the dead. This
time, they are on the small screen. Disc-overy Channel is
airing a mini-series called Walking With Dinosaurs from October
2 to October 5, between 8 and 9 pm, which is sure to take
the viewers breath away.
The three-hour mini-series is a BBC, Discovery Channel, TV
Asahi (Japanese) co-production in association with ProSieben
and France 3. In fact, it is one of the finest examples of
the current buzz word, convergence. The series
uses the expertise of filmmakers, paleontologists, sculptors
and animatronics experts to recreate breathtaking visuals
and sounds of dinosaurs walking the earth.
Walking With Dinosaurs spans 155 million years of prehistory
and combines both science and nail-biting drama of the most
fascinating creatures that ever walked the earth.
A truly remarkable feature of this mini-series are the real
background locations, which are surprisingly similar to those
that probably existed millions of years ago. This, alongwith
flawless animation techniques, makes the series look as natural
as any other wildlife documentary. Far from being depicted
as scary monsters chasing people, the dinosaurs in this series
are shown going about their normal activities in their natural
habitat.
The three-hour series has been made after three years of painstaking
research, a large part of which was taken up by the search
for the right locations which could look like a prehistoric
eco-system. The locations finally chosen were those where
ancient plant systems still exist like the forests of Chile,
South America, New Zealand, the redwood forests of California,
United States.
